Regarding planespotting, keep in mind that most takeoffs and landing at SAN are on Runway 27 due to the onshore prevailing wind. If you're talking about taking pics of planes on approach, the best place to do that is the semicircular parking lot off of Balboa Drive on the southwest end of Balboa Park. Just be aware of your surroundings and make sure your car doors are locked if you wander more than a few feet away from it. There are small camps of transients down at the fenceline next to the freeway and if they have enough energy they will wander up the hill and harass people.
If you want side views with wheels and flaps down for landing, park on the northwest section of North Harbor Drive, which is abeam of the approach end of the runway. Be advised that these are pay spots with aggressive meter maid action, and again be aware of the transients looking to be a pest at any opportunity.

i like both sycuan and viejas casinos.. but they are off the beaten path..
if you are in the gas lamp area, then its a trek.. so have some extra time set aside..
sycuan would be the more party like atmosphere but if ur are looking to relax id choose viejas..
