Every year Orkin Pest Control makes a list of cities with the most service calls for bed bugs.
1) Warren, Michigan, 2) North Las Vegas (not the tourist area), 3) Madison, Wisconsin, 4) Yonkers, New York, 5) Flint, Michigan, 6) Cleveland, Ohio, 7) Huntington West Virginia, 8) Los Angeles, California.
"Then comes Los Angeles. Millions of visitors flock to LA every year hoping to spot celebrities, and with the city preparing to welcome fans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, tourism is only expected to increase. According to the data, though, some visitors may have a better chance of encountering a bed bug than a celebrity."
Prevention & Control Measures
Do NOT place suitcases on the bed or floor: Keep luggage elevated on a luggage rack or in the bathroom.Inspect seams and headboards: Check mattress corners and luggage linings for the bugs, black droppings, or old, sweet/musty odors.Unpack directly into a hot wash: Run clothes on the highest heat setting as soon as you get home to kill any hitchhikers.
To reduce their chances of picking them up in the first place, travelers should reconsider unpacking their clothes in hotel drawers and instead store items in hotel closets or hanging spaces or simply live out of a suitcase.
