Most storage units participate in an online auction site to auction off their overdue unit's contents.
You might want to search Google to locate if your former storage unit does. Then put in a bid. I helped a friend get her things back once, and it was about a fourth of her overdue payment.
I personally think there's a special place in hell for storage unit owners. They lure people in with low inititial prices and then increase them a few months later. And most put their things into storage, thinking (hoping) it's a temporary move, but month after month they pay the bill until that payment is no longer a priority {food and a place to stay are more important}, and it lapses. Of course, they lose all of their things shortly after that...
And the owner gets to sell their things!

Also, most of these places put an additional lock to keep that from happening and restrict gate access if you're behind. Additionally, a lot of the newer places have individual alarm sensors so they know when the doors are open and closed.
