Hawaii SUNSCREEN BAN
May 29 2026 01:24PM more by SmartK9
Tags: Inland Empire , Random (All tags)

A short time ago I referred to a member because I needed help posting a video . After contacting her I was basically told I should stop posting STUPID S**T in blogs since nobody reads them anyway. Oh she also believed my cancer was a total fabrication. Well sorry here is some more STUPID S**T.

As some of you know I am planning a vacation to Kauai in July. Thank you for your great suggestions they were acted on and booked. I should’ve started a go fund me page at the same time. Geez Hawaii is expensive. The only smart thing I did was buy the airline tickets months ago.

I’m in the process of buying supplies for the trip you know sunscreen, Neosporin, advil etc. at Costco when I notice on the sunscreen packaging the statement in bold print HAWAII ACT 104 COMPLIANT. Well it turns out Hawaii has banned the sale of certain sunscreens due to the damage the chemicals in those banned sunscreens cause to the reefs. Now my further research indicated that MAUI is the only island that bans the USE of the prohibited sunscreens with up to a $1000.00 fine per use per day.

I then began reading my itinerary for the trip and all that involved us going into the water clearly states that all sunscreens shall be ACT 104 compliant.

Apologies if you consider this another STUPID S**T blog. I’ve been to the Hawaiian Islands probably 6 times but that includes 2 very short refueling stop going to and coming back from Vietnam War support duties so they really don’t count. I happened across this accidentally so I pass it onto you the members if you are planning a trip to Hawaii and don’t run into this issue.

Safe travels

HOW do they determine what sunscreen you are using?
and WHO are THEY? Sunscreen police,, sniff test,
What is the fine for using "illegal" sunscreen?
Is the illegal sunscreen confiscated letting you to burn up like a lobster?

Hungryman - there’s not a heavy duty enforcement of the ban. And as you point out, it would be difficult to do. Most people, however, comply because one of the reasons they visit Hawaii is to experience the amazing coral reefs. Who would want to kill off the coral if they could avoid doing so by using a certain type of sunscreen and avoiding the use of other types?

Seeing the bleaching and dying of existing coral reefs IS heartbreaking.
There are scientific groups that are regrowing coral reefs in Australia and other areas.
Global warming and reduced oxygen in the oceans is killing off the coral

It’s not going to be the police it’s going to be the locals that will point out the error of your ways. I could have easily been a sunscreen criminal had the bold print of the package caught my eye. I was reaching for the cheaper sunscreen before I thought better of it.

I’m really gonna irritate the locals I’M BRINGING PLASTIC STRAWS WITH ME! My simple act of defiance

I have been to Hawaii numerous times. People are strict about this rule. They have free sunscreen in dispensers in most hotels and ONLY sell the reef safe type.

You travel somewhere you RESPECT their land and rules. It's not only toxic for the reefs but the wildlife, mainly the sea turtles. It's just like you're not allowed to touch them either. Trust me, I have seen many fights and arguments break out on the beach over both the sunscreen and the turtle touching.

It's a thing called respect and sadly most people no longer have any.

If you take any boat trips or excursions where you are on the water they DO check your sunscreen.

Is it really that hard to respect the wildlife and rules?!

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!!!

They use mineral based sunscreen oil in Europe as regular sunscreen can be absorbed in the body within minutes and cause cancer.

The Hawaiians are VERY STRICT about their land, oceans, and sea life (and their Pele). I have been to 3 islands and all are the same. They put protecting their land, oceans, and sea first and foremost. They understand the assignment.

IF you don't want to abide by a place's rules DO NOT GO! You don't deserve to experience it anyways.

Some of you would be the type who would take something from the Island (WHEN THERE ARE SIGNS POSTED EVERYWHERE) and then have to turn around and try to send it back because of your bad luck and misfortune. There is a REASON these signs exist and the stories have so many truths in them.

-- Ok. I'm done ranting.

I agree with ABs comments. I have also been numerous times and have visited 3 islands. Hawaiians are serious about protecting and preserving their ancestral lands. Despite all their efforts, it has changed dramatically in some places over the last 25+ years. Still beautiful, but we all need to do our part. Headed to Maui in a couple weeks, and I have my reef safe sunscreen, as always.😁

And Melanin also protects against 5G as well. So it was said in my research. Course that doesn't mean here.

I've always suspected Sunscreen not good and may cause Cancer along with energy drinks. So I use very little.

Caffeine in energy drinks doesn't cause cancer that we know of but the additives like red40, etc that's banned in the EU but ok for usa does

Colgate total used to have an antibiotic called triclosan. They secretly removed it prior to the pandemic. Fda approved despite warnings from the scientific community about acquired resistance. Goes to show if your lobbying power is strong anything can be legal

And Floride is not your friend either. Most tooth paste has it. Although there are now many Floride Free available in stores.

Fined something that has Nano Silver, as silver has anti-bacterial properties. May not find it in regular stores though.

The FDA / CDC is not your friend.
