Between those options....ir was definitely Letterman.....but when I was a teenager, I stayed glued to Arsenio. That was a whole vibe in the early 90s.

For me.... letterman came on after Carson when it was on NBC until it moved to CBS.....as a kid though, I remember having to suffer through Mash or the 11 o'clock news before the late night shows started!

Eva, you're showing your age --- I mean, your youth. Carson was never in a competition with Letterman or Leno. He was the undisputed leader of late night during his 30-year run on The Tonight Show. Carson was the mentor to Letterman and Leno, and when Carson retired in 1992 there was an ugly competition between the two of them over who should be his successor. A really good film was made about this in 1995 called "The Late Shift".

OMG, Wally George! @ Dahlialove I just blasted coffee out my nose. Dude came to my college to do a talk and that was the best entertainment experience of my life! I still laugh at that memory. You just made my day !

BUT then he got just mean and one sided, it was no longer funny so I stopped watching
Gave me a new respect and admiration for carson and how good he was, he poked fun at everyone (himself most of all) - you couldn't tell his politics
In hindsight, carson was the best.

I was a member of an old club SDASP back in the day. We used to have semi weekly socials a meet and greet basically. I showed up on my Triumph old school cafe motorcycle to social.
started chatting up a lady, caring my leathers. helmet and wearing a Triumph motorcycle shirt. she asked me my handle and I said it is kind of obvious it is Triumph04. she says owe you're name like the triumph the insult dog! I love him...
She crushed my fragile ego and I think the other guys started busting up...so I changed my profile pic to current one soon after (.

I used to really like Letterman until he turned into a dick.
Leno was really good as well, kept it light and fun, and good at interviewing guests.
