The new and improved “Move Over Law”. So you are traversing down the highway on your way to a meeting with a simply beautiful person. You always have that nagging sense that your vehicle might break down or you’ll get a flat. Well the flat actually happened to me a couple weeks ago luckily I was able to park in a rather busy shopping center and since I was only .02 miles from the meeting location and I needed the exercise I walked no problem. This meeting location had shower facilities so that wasn’t an issue. But what if my flat caused me to stop on the shoulder of the roadway or highway.

Under the new move over law ANY vehicle stopped on the roadway displaying hazard warning lights or any other means indicating that vehicle is disabled any approaching vehicle must SLOW DOWN (if safe to do so) and MOVE OVER ONE LANE(again if safe to do so).

If you are cited for this the fine can be above the $250 range with penalty assessments and other fees tacked on and it’s a one pointer on your record.

So let’s talk scenario here. Cops are using those gray stealthy Durangos on the 10 fwy. They pull over a traffic violator. With the Durango is an even stealthier motor cop. You drive on by thinking about your upcoming meeting that awaits you at the next exit and you make no attempt to slow down or move over. You are now a 2fer.

Something else to be aware of.

Oh wow maybe it's cause I took my driver's exam in another state but I always thought that was the law anyways...seems like common sense. In fact, I would require drivers and cops to wear reflector vests they should wear when operating on the highway. I keep one handy in the glove compartment for situations like that. Too many tired and unsober drivers on CA highways... plus I see people dicking around on tiktok and applying makeup all the time.

Now if the cops decide to set up traps... I can see that happening.

You are correct draftyswoop it’s been the law for a while as it applies to Cal Trans Law Enforcement and Fire/Rescue. The new addition encompasses ANY vehicle now. Now you have another reason the semi trucks are driving in the lane next to the slow lane all the time to avoid those situations and causing traffic to backup.

It has not been a law in California. If you have ever been stranded on the side of the freeway and cars are ripping by, this law would be nice. Since the shoulders are so small and narrow. It has been a law in most states.

But most of the idiots out there don't even pull over for firetrucks and ambulances.

And don't get me started on those idiots that run around with no headlights on. Even in the new cars that have automatic lights. Turn you lights on before I hit you.

Be safe out there.

Thank you for this. I have always done this because it's just the safe thing to do. After seeing videos like the one I linked below I'm so glad that they finally made it a law. Better safe than sorry

Warning!!!

The video is kinda bad so just watch at your own risk.

I think that cops should make people exit off of the freeways and highways when pulling people over but that's a different subject

That video is very hard to watch. There’s been a reason for years even before the law was thought of that LEO routinely makes passenger side approaches on any roadway or highway.

Imagine what would have happened to the officer had he been on the driver’s side of the vehicle? It a tow truck driver or someone changing their tire? I mentioned I was changing my tire my in business parking lot. I can’t tell you how many times I had to stand up and press myself against my car as cars pulled into park or simply driving through the spot next to me. I know they don’t expect to see some old f..k like me changing a tire in a business parking lot. I’m actually surprised I did it and didn’t throw my back out.

Moral of the story be safe slow down and move over. No sense giving this state more of our money they already take to much as it is.

@june.moon that is actually exactly how the father of a high school friend of mine died. He was pulled over to the side of the freeway after breaking down, police car behind him with lights flashing, he's outside his car talking to the officer, guy speeding down the highway loses control, smashes into both cars and kills both the police officer and my friend's father.

Moral of the story: You should be doing this anyway and anyone that isn't should be ashamed of themselves.

If possible, ALWAYS GET OFF THE FREEWAY. If your car won't start then you have no other choice but if you have a flat tire, drive your car off the freeway. Big deal if you ruin a $1000 rim or the fender gets damaged. It's better than another vehicle killing you.

When driving from nv to ca I seen the truckers always all start moving over a lane and it would because there would be a vehicle.

I always use Waze to navigate and it will say there is a vehicle ahead.

This is good to know

I would add that people driving in a neighborhood with two lanes should drive in the far left lane vs the right lane as children/dogs will "dart out", parked cars will open their doors, etc.

You can always change lanes as you get 50-100 feet from the intersection where you wish to turn right.

They need to modify the DMV Handbook to reflect this.

PS: Lets try to use our turn signals as a courtesy to those who cannot read minds yet.

Might as well include the year old law that has been drastically affecting drivers.
California's Daylighting Law AB 413:
"No parking within 20 feet of the approaching side of any marked or unmarked crosswalk or intersection".

Municipalities are not painting the 20 feet no parking area, creating a lot of citations. Basic rule to figure length from intersection, one's car would be at least 20feet long.

lawforza1: If ever you think what you're doing is useless, just remember somewhere there's a person whose entire job is to install turn signals.

The joke use to be about bmw's. Heck even police officer dont use signals. Ive had several police officer non-emergency lights driving cut me off or turn into me, almost colliding , because they're not paying attention and not using signals. And because this isn't a democratic country unfortunatly the citizens cant issue citations

Since we're talking moving over, the same applies to bikes now.

Drivers must move over a lane if there is a bike in the bike lane. If there is only one lane, they must slow until there is room to pass with three feet between them and the bike.

I do this instinctively. Aren'twe all supposed to do this? Trash, obstruction, dead deer, broken down car in a lane.... just drive slowly around it
