Feeling Lost About My Career Path, Could Use Some Advice

I’m 2nd year in college, but I’m having a hard time deciding what I want to do career-wise.

I’m studying paralegal studies and considering pursuing a bachelor’s degree, but I’m unsure what to major in. I’ve explored English, business administration, criminal justice, and a few other options.

I’ve realized that I’m particularly interested in investigative work, especially criminal investigations, interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence, and uncovering the truth. At the same time, I really value flexibility, financial stability, and having a healthy work-life balance.

I don’t want to spend years pursuing a degree only to realize the career isn’t right for me. I want to make an informed decision, but there are so many possibilities that it’s becoming overwhelming.

I’d love to hear from anyone who works in law, investigations, law enforcement, or a related field. What do you enjoy about your career? What are the downsides? Would you choose the same path again?

I’m also open to advice from anyone who’s been in a similar position. How did you figure out what you wanted to do?

Any genuine advice or personal experiences would be appreciated!

Do NOT go for paralegal.

Aside from the fact that paralegals are almost entirely going to be replaced by AI, IT SUCKS. Lawyers don't pay shit, you're going to cap out at around 120k per year at the high end in a HCOL area for a high stress constant work type of role.

I have my degree in paralegal studies.

It's difficult to get your foot in the door in the first place. You can easily pigeonhole yourself with a legal specialty or even the fucking state you're in... I fucked myself by doing public service shit all through college, doesn't pay jack shit of course. Rewarding.

It is overall just not worth it unless you plan on going to law school. Even then I would still encourage you to not do that. You'll graduate to a highly oversaturated market that's all about who and not what you know for the most part and likely 100k+ in debt. Associate attorneys make like 100k per year jn HCOL areas starting out. Factor in $1200 mo in student loans for whatever salary ypu imagine lol

All of this, again, for a job that is going to mostly be replaced by AI.

Paralegal was an easy pivot to hospital admin for me and executive admin/asst roles but again, unless you have a clinical degree you are capped around 110-120k per year... barely enough to survive around CA unless you have a spouse making that or more or a roommate. Def not support yourself and live alone kinda money lol & why handicap yourself that way anyway?

Just my two cents.

Helena is spot-on. If you have a passion for investigations, you might want to consider getting a criminal justice degree and getting into law enforcement. That brings up a whole new set of issues, but Helena is correct about how actual practicing law is looking these days and quite frankly, being a paralegal means you work harder and make a third of the money of the lawyers who are probably gonna treat you like shit either way.

You should shut down your HX account and put a stop to all this activity.

Then spend all your time in college trying to find a husband. Look for guys who are already proven to be go-getters, like the guys who are in leadership positions in campus organizations. He should be majoring in something useful, of course.

Then marry him, have kids, and be a stay-at-home mom. You'll be WAY happier. Hope he never finds out about your past life.

PS: Paralegals are obsolete.
PPS: LOL that you want to be in law enforcement.

Legal can be replaced with AI, along with medical.

investigators will not be replaced with AI. Although, AI is a useful tool for investigators.

investigators will be replaced with AI. Because of all the cameras it can follow you and track you every where now.
