Yes, start there & when you get your feel look at joining other clubs, Not mandatory but very useful if you really want to participate.

Unless you are pretty thick-skinned I would be very careful in posting to blogs - the Keyboard Kowboys and Warriors on here can be very insensitive, actually very brutal at times. Read them a lot to get the feel for how communication and information flows. And when you do start to post, know your audience!
90% of all beefs on here can usually be attributed to poor communication skills on the part of one or both of the parties involved. Say what you mean, clearly, and mean what you say.
Be respectful. Respect will not always be returned but avoid stooping to the lower level.
Have fun and don't forget to ask if it is OK to add someone to your network. You don't really have to ask, it is just more respectful. Also ask if they would also add you to their network.
"Leveling up" (going from Level 0 to Level 1, etc.) is a very complex algorithm and difficult to totally understand (so don't bother asking) but the best thing to remember is that adding someone to your network that is a higher level than you are will probably have the best result. That doesn't mean you should avoid Level 0's, they want to have fun too, and who knows, you might find that diamond in the rough that has gone unnoticed!
Don't get frustrated in finding it difficult to connect with someone (or anyone) at first - it is a trust issue, and you are an unknown until you get that network going and others essentially vouch for you.
Summary: Have fun - and don't be a dick!

Almost forgot one of the most important parts:
BEFORE actually planning to connect with someone do your due diligence. Check their network for any less than favorable things. You can also check history on any blogs that they have authored or are mentioned in. If you don't do the due diligence then it is pretty silly to complain that you were mislead by someone that has some tainted history, or is not too well liked - for whatever reason. All of that information is there for a purpose - use it!

I'm not doing the tutoring, I am offering to put him in touch with a guy that will - for the cost of beers! I don't even like beer! I'm a wine or cosmo kind of girl, and that can get expensive!
The reason I offered to help is for a number of reasons:
1) He is in San Diego, my homebase when I am not in Florida, or elsewhere.
2) Newbies have a tendency to make mistakes that can follow them for a long time. I would like to see them avoid those mistakes.
3) He is young. That really is the most likely person to make a mistake due to inexperience (not saying HE is inexperienced, its just a statistical thing).
If a new guy makes a mistake and becomes disillusioned then it can affect the site in that he either goes cold on it and stops interacting, or worse, goes offsite and bad mouths HX.
Just doing my part (or maybe a little extra) to help make HX a fun place to be, for hopefully a long time.
