NO, he is NOT against NATO. But he is sick and tired of the United States bearing the financial weight of NATO. He called them out as nearly all of the nations when he took office were NOT meeting their financial agreement. When Trump took office only 4 countries were meeting the 2% requirement. When he left there were 9 and every single country EXCEPT Canada had upped its contribution from when Trump took office until he left.
Trump's position is that the rest of NATO needs to step up, including regarding the Ukraine conflict. These countries for decades have put the burden on the U.S. for treaty defense in the region. We typically spend 3.5% of our GDP.

The truth of the matter is that NATO members don't have to pay to belong, what they actually pay is administrative costs to maintain it. 2% benchmark means that each member should spend on its own defense in order to be able to contribute to the joint defense of the alliance, and it is voluntary, therefore there is no debt or delinquency. Putin thinks that NATO is a threat to his ambition of expanding Russia's influence of Eastern European countries. The only time Article 5, joint defense of the alliance was invoked only once after Sept 11th, 2001 attack.
