When they're booking, once a year, they go in less than an hour.

Reservations are taken six months in advance, to the day, so it takes careful planning and luck.
And yes, the Bloody Mary's at the Beachcomber are first rate.

Fireside inn Cambria close to Hearst castle is a nice getaway. Take the castle tour while you're there.

"None of the people staying at the cottages look like they're enjoying themselves."

When the State took over the beach after the lease expired they remolded and fixed up the cottages. This took over 2 years. While the place was being remolded CA Park Rangers lived there with their families and had friends stay for free.

Consider that these were originally weekend retreats, built by ranch hands on the Irvine Ranch. They were handed down by those to their families. The State of California was tasked with making them safe and habitable, while maintaining their 1940's "charm". This means a lot of it 70 years old or more. Many have not been remodeled and are unsafe to be occupied. The front desk has cancellations nightly, as people expect one thing and reality hits them, they vote with their feet and walk out. You cannot park next to your unit, park across PCH and take the shuttle. But from these very small "homes" the beach and the waves are as close as you can get for the low price per overnight. Dress warm, heating is minimal.

Stayed there before for a weekend, it’s super small quarters, feels like a camp from back in the day. We still had a good time, layed on the beach during the day and drank and danced till the wee hours. Would recommend if you have a larger group, single or couples could get lonely
