Beach campgrounds open for reservations either 3 or 6 months before arrival date, they fill very quickly. Slim chance you find anything for September.

Pismo Beach in Grover city. Air your tires down 15 psi and bring a portable air compressor for after you leave the sand. Lower pressure creates floatation and helps from getting stuck in the sand.

The website Estimated mentioned is the way to go but the beach camping sites get booked so far in advance. Thornehill Broome in Malibu does offer 12 of their however many sites they have on a first come first serve basis. Officially the check in time is 2:00PM but on weekends people actually line up as early as 7:00AM to try and get a spot. Best of luck! Hope you can find one!

I was able to get a campsite at Crystal Cove, not exactly on the beach, but pretty close. Also not on the beach but I was able to roll in and find a site at Leo Carrillo State Park.
