Literary agents will usually want to see a chapter or two and an outline of the remaining chapters. You can contact their offices to ask for submission guidelines/specifications.
? are you writing this yourself... or will you be working with a ghostwriter? (the quality of the 'storytelling' will determine how far it goes)
! a good editor is essential. There are two types- content (story, flow, coherance) and technical (grammar, punctuation, etc).
Self-publishing is really easy nowdays, but for ~your~ story the marketing aspect will be vital, so I wouldn't recommend it.
You might consider periodicals - magazines, etc. It's a shorter format, and might open other publishing doors.
