because social media started, subreddits, etc..
but i dont think they really lost popularity!
discord is my favorite place to hang out online

They did not. They were shut down when I think right around the Time the DOJ took over Backpage. They really wanted to crack down on TOS violations and even though the chat room was temporary in nature there were violations going on.
After that they started charging men for mail and locked down most everything.
