1800s America was different times. Life was tougher, and they didn't enjoy the technology we now have. The gender divide was black and white. People had to grow up fast back then. Men had to ask permission to court their females, and they decided yay or nay. I don't really know, read it in a novel set in the 1800s.

She was a fine lady as I recall.

Another novel I read a while back set in a convent in 1600 Italy, Sacred Hearts, by Sarah Dunant has a little bit of everything, something for everyone, it't a novel about forbidden love intertwined with a pandemic that hit the world during that time. Read it! You won't be disappointed.

I dunno.
The connotation of a "kept woman" is a side woman, by definition other than a wife, one that has nothing to offer other than looks & sex.
When the sex dulls and the looks fade, there is nothing keeping the man to "keep" the woman.
Seems to me that the shelf life would be pretty short lived.
Not really something to rely on long term.
But, hey, that's just me.
