I think it's both. I usually do it for fun. Although there was one occasion I ran out of mail, and I was trying to get the attention of this beautiful lady and I hoped that if I sent enough flirts she would send me her contact info. š

From my perspective, if a lady sends a flirt, it draws my attention to her ad or profile that I may not have otherwise noticed. So, from a marketing perspective, it's a great way to draw attention to yourself.
