It's definitely concerning and jarring And to your point that's why side gigs are becoming more critical. Glad that you have some other things going to keep you going. Hoping that you come through this wave unscathed, and you can leave on YOUR terms when the time is right. It is for sure to see your peers not have the same fortune.
My company has two seta of layoffs pretty much annually at this point. Some have been minor, some major, but all impacting the ability to focus when those times come (March & August).

Thank MAGA

It’s not MAGA. It’s AI and automation. And the fact that people haven’t adjusted their skill set to this new reality.
It’s gonna catch at least one generation off guard and that’s not really any fault of their own.
But to say it’s MAGA is insane. I have no love for the MAGA right but I also don’t need to fabricate blame for them either.

stock mrkt at an all time high...must be MAGA!!

While the unions and democrats are high fiving each other on extracting as much $ as possible from employers, companies are slowly putting in the automation and robotics to displace significant number of their staff. Labor (and related) costs are just wrecking their profits. They are doing this on the down low, but when they flip the switch, there is going to be a lot of layoffs, especially for those who are not proactively upgrading their skills. California may have to institute universal basic income. People can protest all they want but you can’t make a company hire people.

It doesn't help that Trump says "you don't need to go to collage".
A lot of you males are choosing not to got to collage thinking they will get a job in the trades.
I don't know if you know but manufacturing jobs are not here anymore.

Everybody doesn't have to go to college. That's the biggest load of crap ever. (I'm a college grad, Electrical Engineer.)
There are all kinds of trades and professions that don't require a degree. My kid went to a 2 year technical school and makes $169K a year in IT. We need electricians, plumbers, carpenters, IT workers, X-ray technicians, health lab workers, etc. etc.etc.
It is so clutch to have a side hustle. Good for you.
AI is going to shake up the economy and the world, that's for sure. AI is like electricity in Edison's time. We can't even fully imagine what we're in for.

I assume she has a health-care related research job since her background is in nursing. If that is the case, the layoffs are probably due to the freezing of NIH grants, which as nothing to do with A.I. and everything to do with the current Administration. For no rationale reason, critical research on diseases has been put on hold by the DOGE crowd.

Just b a gram barber...they make 100k a year...yea right🙄

I'm a college grad as well. Many of my friends learned a trade and started their careers long before I did. In many countries, that many tout that we should be more like, their equivalent to our community colleges are trade schools, each dedicated to a few fields. I believe Trump's direction is to lessen imports and encourage the return of manufacturing jobs, something prior administrations didn't give one fuck about about.

@ColossusJones you're right... AI+drones=Terminator+++

As a guy with a graduate degree I can tell you this shit is largely a waste of time and money.
Lots of employers are starting to look past the college degree and hire based on the aptitude they see.
The issue is that the jobs being created are way outta sync with the skills people have today. And lots of the jobs that were done by people are generally substitutable by AI or technology.
That’s the future. Better learn to deal with it. Fortunately escorting and our hobby isn’t an AI or tech thing. We still will never find a substitute that rules out what we do.

AI is not replacing researchers, but Trump and DOGE did cut a lot of research funds. So yes, blame MAGA.
|
|
|
As someone who works with AI daily, I don't think it is at the point of replacing many people. Anyone who blindly uses something produced by AI is setting themselves up for failure.
Does it make one more efficient, yes.
With that being said, I feel that most layoffs are corporate greed. Making people do more will less while top level exec pay skyrockets.
In the bast 10 years or so, I feel like I have absorbed 3 roles minus 3 times the pay.

Lmfao its not AI. AI is no where close to replacing jobs. Trust me I work in IT.

I use AI daily, and it adds to my work.
Yes it can provide many correct answers.
It is the answers that it omits that cost me money, so I have to double check its work.

Perhaps Gene Rodenberry got it right, The Borg be upon us all. Well until AI becomes Saint like ... Hmm ...
I asked the hiring person why he selected me back in 79, he said, "Because you already know how to work with tools, we don't teach that here." Earnings were double of min wage back then.

The hard on for AI comes from corporate boardrooms and shareholders.
I have it write PowerShell scripts for me daily; however, I need to know how to prompt it to create content relevant to our environment, then test it in my testing environment before rolling it out to production.
On the other hand, prepare for platforms like YouTube and all your social media to be flooded with AI-slop. It's already happening, but it's just going to get worse.
And call your grandma and tell her the voice she hears on the phone isn't you, it's an AI bot that harvested your voice and is using it to scam her.

same here.
One of the companies I work for is starting to eliminate what we call corporate category managers, moving forward with blanket or umbrella management.
While there are new opportunities, not as many are available to the number of employees we have resulting in layoffs and "early retirement".
Unfortunately, with e-commerce being so convenient and competitive in price that seems to be the direction the consumer is taking.
I think its happening every where.

Yesterday: Company layoffs is signaling something is going wrong with the company
Today: Layoffs is signaling something is going right with the company
AI is certainly a factor, especially for entry-level jobs and certain sectors, and will continue to get worse. But the real driver currently is simply corporate greed. Everyone is simply a line item on a spreadsheet. Experience, skillsets, productivity, tenure, etc….not even a factor. For many corporate environments, anyone in mid/upper-level management, making $200K+/year and not a part of the “club”, you are going to be at risk for the next coming years. This will namely effecting older-Mil to Gen-X'ers,

Lawers should fear for their livelyhoods.
If there's one profession that deserves to get creamed it's them.
Gone are the big retainers and playing golf while you charge clients $250/hour. What they're good for now is their relationships with prosceutors and judges where they can trade for convictions or "Hey, I need a win let me win this one and you'll get the next.
I have 3 trademarks and a company filed cancellations against them then backed that up with filing for them themselves. First they sued me in civil court and I crushed them in 2 days. Next they filed the cancellations at USPTO. 3 years and 3 law firms later for them and I won all 3 cases yesterday without an attorney. They wanted retainers of $15,000 to 20,000 foreach case. Like they always do until it's time to go to trial, they assure you they know the judge and can get this done no problem but when push comes to shove they want more money. Sorry to tell you of you are an attorney but you no longer have a hold on access to information. You're life is changing no way out.
AI levels the playing field where you don't need their bullshit anymore. Message me if you want to learn how.
Do you know why attorney's wear neck ties?..................
So their foreskindoesn't cover their face!
My divorce attorney told me that jioke right before I fired him for being full of shit.
If I offendedyou with this then tough shit. I'm tired of the bulshit I get from attorneys.
Accountants, you're next.

We will have manufacturing back here pretty soon, if we can get the corrupt liberals lining their pockets with cash. They sold us out and if you can't see the truth then you're goingto be gone soon too. No more racism or any of that shit. AI makes it where it doesn't matter where you came from or what color you are. Whoever chooses to be sucessful wins and the lazy one's that don't have the drive or will to put in the work will be left behind. AI I believe will eleminate racism in just a few years.
