Mission Valley or Mission Bay is at the intersection of I-5 and I-8, so easy access from N/S (except during afternoon rush hour traffic) and the East. La Jolla/UTC is centrally located between South and North, and accessible to the I-15 corridor to the East. Carlsbad is a good option if you want to reach Southern OC as well as San Diego.
