My phone told me there was going to be an earthquake and then there was one which is fucking weird

Girl I just happen to be in San Diego area today.

Caltech doesn't have it listed yet.
They have a 5.2 in Julian at 10:08am
i think thats the one
Google seems to think it was a 6.7
any seismologists here? lol
So what....Not the first and won't be the last.
I've met a few size-mologists here.

Pretty good jolt. Same experience w my phone. I got the alert and then boom, the quake. Pretty wild.
I'm up on the 11th floor of a hotel in OC and it was a pretty good shake. Surprised it lasted as long as it did, but that may have been from the swaying action just dying out.
it definitely felt like a longer one

I think it might have been revised from 6.7 to 5.2, which is a huge difference on the logarithmic Richter scale. If memory serves, revisions from initial estimates are not uncommon. A 6.2 earthquake would have 10 times the energy and 31.6 times the amplitude of a 5.2 earthquake, but I’m no expert.
I received the warning on my phone but I did not feel the earthquake in LA. Even so, it’s pretty awesome that science and technology have advanced to the point of being able to give us a warning even a few seconds before we feel an earthquake. Does anyone know if the technology was funded by the state or the federal government?

Pretty sizeable in Irvine. I felt like an idiot not pausing my video game to spring to action in case of emergency lol
@Iced Coffee I was playing Fallout during the quake, what about you?
lol Dark Souls 2 for me. Thus, literally unable to pause while fighting a WYVERN. Sigh.

Regarding the phone alert that many of us got: I am in San Diego about 50 miles from Julian. My phone buzzed about 1 second after the first jolt. People in Los Angeles report getting their phone alert about 15 seconds before they felt the quake. I believe that shows how long it takes for the shaking to travel the distance to L.A. We didn't all feel it at the same time.
Everyone has their own priorities but I have to ask how the video games make it impossible to hit pause. Obviously I don’t play video games. That saves me both time and money.

I’m sure you’re correct, DL.

@icedcoffee
I know what you mean. I actually thought about running for the stairs or elevators but then realized that being on the 11th floor I would never make it out if the bldg collapsed anyway, so I just went back to my card game!
But I did go down a few minutes later and sat in my car for 30 minutes in case it was just a precursor to a bigger one.

I couldn't imagine being that high up during an earthquake. My brain immediately assuming the worst. Glad you're okay.

For the specific one I'm playing, it literally does not allow you to pause it (for the sale of gimmicky difficulty). Also, nome of us here are about saving money 😉

You might get MOLD from an earthquake
Maybe I just have better ways to spend my money.
I can help you with that! Consider me a expert on spending your money! lol
Why do you think I need help?
You obviously have disposable income, therefor, ergo, you could use some help!

I see the alert on my phone. It says "6.7 earthquake, run, take cover." Ten seconds later I feel a
little bump. But that was it.
Funny thing is that it did not sound like a warning alert.
It sounded like a happy little chime that I have not heard before coming from my phone.
I didn't even look at it at first. Then I look at it. "TAKE COVER" pretty crazy, lol

Felt it pretty good at our office in Temecula! But All of our phones alerts went off about 15
seconds After the shaking had stopped! Glad there wasn't any major damage or injuries!
