Depends what your doing:

Gemologist: appraises gems based on characteristics

Lapidary: shapes "cuts" the gem and polishes for detail

....if your looking for an appraisal then go with the gemologist.

If you are just looking for a quick evaluation to see if it something is real or not just take it to a pawn shop. Tell them you are considering selling and ask if they are interested. They will look at it real quick and tell you if it is a real diamond or not. Then just reject their offer (or not). If you don't trust the pawn shop then take it a different pawn shop for a second opinion.

Not a fool-proof method but should be good for 90% of the cases.

No appraisal fees!
