Biden administration says they won't enforce ban, leaving it to Trump. He was a TikTok hater during the campaign but I doubt he will enforce either and may extend so that a buyer can take over. So many people make their living on that app these days, it would be a shame to see it go.

WASHINGTON, Jan 17 (Reuters) - TikTok warned late Friday it will go dark in the United States on Sunday unless President Joe Biden's administration provides assurances to companies like Apple and Google that they will not face enforcement actions when a ban takes effect.
The statement came hours after the Supreme Court upheld a law banning TikTok in the United States on national security grounds if its Chinese parent company ByteDance does not sell it, putting the popular short-video app on track to go dark in just two days.

One thing I don't understand, and perhaps someone can explain to me:
Why is TikTok a threat for collecting data, and our government through the NSA isn't?
They both collect data, why is the data that TikTok collects "bad" and NSA is "good?
I'm sure it's the "who" and not the "that."
tiktok went dark tonight
and it collects less data than half the apps on most phones tbh
It's because it's the Chinese government collecting the data, not some corporations wanting to sell you crap.

Chinese billionaire oligarchs’ bending our minds versus Ausi’ or other techbros. WCGW?
Just follow the money - TikTok probably wont play nicely in the $sandbox so our congress and presz said "no fair".
Now new POTUS will come in and swindle the " best deal ever in the history" to bring back TT. So long as you pay someone lotsa $$
Aaannd then blame Biden for 4 years....welcome back to chaos 2025

Love tik tok 😿

Taking down TikTok because they are Chinese owned. They should take down all Chinese owned apps. Should take down WeChat also
I have some bad news. Facebook and X also collects your personal data.
yeah some people can access the app still, but not me lol rip
nevermind, its genuinely back
TikTok is back.
I still haven't heard the argument for TicTok being taken down. What makes it a threat to national security?
it's not

“TikTok automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users, including internet and other network activity information such as location data and browsing and search histories. This data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans' personal and proprietary information—potentially allowing China to track the locations of Federal employees and contractors, build dossiers of personal information for blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage.” -federal register.gov

It’s only a bad app when foreign governments are accessing everyone’s information. Perfectly fine for the US to have that info though. Lol. I mean I don’t think any government should have access to all our data. But the world is changed.
There are many reasons why it is bad for foreign governments to collect our data. We, the USA, had a secret base that was discovered because people were logging their exercise data online. It showed their running routes and what got outlined was the perimeter of a secret base. Look it up. The app was called Strava and the base was in Afghanistan.
When people have no idea how things work, and are unaware of security risks, it puts everyone at risk.
It didn’t take long for Trump to roll over for China.
As it is most of life - a few people fuck it up for everyone else.
Military could just ban it's use while on base.
I’m guessing once the app is on your phone it collects data whether you’re using it or not.
Scantron & hard John, thanks for your responses on the security "threat"
I'm still baffled on why tiktok is "bad", I mean, I get they collect data, but as others point out, so does every other app - which is disclosed when you sign up.
With the press it's gotten, everyone should be aware of it if not, you are living under a rock.
Like with here, I don't provide personal data, other platforms, you know what you put on there isn't "yours", it's not for 'free'.
I would assume most of us when they log into their work computer, it's a reminder that it's THEIR system, and any access and data is there's, with no 'reasonable assurance of privacy'
For the secret base, didn't know that, but shame on the base brass not enforcing better security protocols.
Don't want personal data in the "wrong hands" don't post.
My beef is the NSA (and others) collects data without your permission, Tiktok you give them permission, it's THEIR platform. NSA data collection is WITHOUT your permission.
I think I feel better now after the rant. ;-)

I think it’s a judgement call who you prefer to have access to every bit of your personal data:
The U. S. government
The Chinese government
U. S. corporations
Chinese corporations
Multinational corporations

On the national security questions that are being raised, it's not that TixTox gathers your data with your permission that's at issue. As stated all apps collect data. What makes it a national security issue is that TixTok's parent company ByteDance is a Chinese owned company and is required by Chinese law to turn over all data gathered to the government upon request. That requirement is what makes it a national security for the US.

“better security protocols”
Unless you have figured out a better way for those “protocols” to work they would probably involve banning all military from downloading TikTok or maybe even banning smartphone use for all military personnel. Good luck enforcing that or recruiting with that in place.

^^^
Now I've never been an active member of the military, but seems to me if you are stationed on a secret base...... well it's a secret - right?
You take any and all measures necessary to maintain secrecy.
No personal cell phones. Period. Secret base is secret right? Before deployment take all personal cell phones.
At very minimum, don't upload info to the cloud - pretty stupid if you ask me.
Brass should know better - want to track health data, do it with analog pencil & paper, like they did 30 years ago - simple.
No cell phone use at all not even government "locked down" phones- metadata can be tracked, let alone other stuff that's willingly sent outside the control of the military.
on a secret base, Zero communication with outside world, and by zero, I mean zero.
Inexcusable.

not tik-tok coming back faster than a toxic partner and I love how they make sure to thank Trump.
It's all so wild. Why do I feel like I'm in an abusive relationship with the government and it managers.
anywho.. we have so many other worthwhile things to worry about. Hope everyone is practicing self-care and moving forward the best you can.
With your rules nobody would ever enlist in the military.
I can't help but wonder if the move to ban TicTok is just a ploy to force the sale to a U.S. billionaire. With all the grifting going on in D.C. it certainly would not surprise me.
I know I had an abusive government relationship for the last 4 years. Thank god that's over.
Until nuisance is president.

Talking about corruption, when are we going to talk about the blatant corruption going on with Trump's cryptocurrency, which just launched Friday?
Not only is it an excellent vehicle for money laundering, where foreign governments and corporations can bribe Trump without any paper trail, Trump (and his companies) made $58 million in fees in one day and the value of the cryptocurrency Trump holds is over $38 billion.
Again, all of this happened two days before his inauguration.
Now, how much do you think Trump's going to make by saving TicTok? Does anyone seriously think he's going to make nothing off of it?
But we should all admire Trump for refusing his $400,000 yearly salary as President.

And biden won't be there to pardon him. Like he did for the biden crime family
TikTok user data practices put individuals vulnerable to identity theft, stalking, unlawful discrimination, emotional distress and mental health issues, social stigma, and reputational harm.
Any social media platform controlled by the CCP should be banned in the US. Bytedance is the owner of TikTok. Bytedance is controlled by the CCP.
The CCP wants to infiltrate American social media on a mass scale to influence content that favors the communist party. Bytedance's AI Chat app is marketed in American schools and and universities and says America bad. China good.
The CCP wants to destroy America from the inside and TikTok is one of the tools they use to accomplish that.
Trump wants to postpone the TikTok ban from Apple and Google online stores so he and Musk can buy it. That goal is not a secret. With all the data TikTock has on American citizens, well, you guys don't seem to care that the CCP has that data. But you should be equally scared about what Trump will do with it if Musk buys TikTok.
Time for Americans to wake up. I dont think you want the CCP OR Trump to have that data.

"And biden won't be there to pardon him. Like he did for the biden crime family"
Are we still going with the lies about the Biden family? Come on, Grumpy, you're better than that.

The Trump cryptocurrency took a 40% nosedive after the grifter released the Melania cryptocurrency today.
He’s going to sell timeshares at the White House next.

This right here ^ Does anyone understand, they know more about you than you ?
Trump's coin is a Meme coin, so I hear, another reason not to buy. And how did it manage a 18 or 19 Ranking already?
Damn. I thought one had a choice on buying crypto?
I buy the coins I choose. If you don't want to purchase, don't.

Putting info into TikTok is still voluntary, don't like their well published negatives, don't use it.
Seems simple to me.
There are other entities out there (NSA, DHS, FBI, DEA, IRS) that WITHOUT your knowledge or acceptance tracks you.
That's the real issue...... IMHO.
I fear our government's intrusion as it's outside of our control, more so than something that's 100% voluntary.
But, there are plenty of lemmings in the world who buy what they are told.
