Hi LGS.
If you buy from Carmax or Carvana or something similar, you'll get a warranty for a few months that will ensure you didn't get a lemon. Also, you can shop for a price range that fits your budget. (You can even make an offer to see if they'll take less than what they're asking.) If you buy from a lot, it's riskier because you don't know if they'll honor a warranty like the well know corporations. Also, the bigger companies have a stringent method of checking out the cars they buy to sell. They will usually finance for you, too, but you might get a better interest rate at a credit union, etc.
Good luck!

DON'T buy a car from carmax!
They're cars are way over priced.
Before you buy or even look head over to - https://my.caredge.com/
And check out their videos on youtube.
They have a lot of great advice on buying a new and used car.

Used honda or toyota with low miles will last a long time

AutoNation is a good start to see what a fair(er?) price is on a used car. Their used cars prices are usually set, and you can't haggle. I would go for a CPO, or if not CPO at the very least, ask the dealership if you can take it to mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection.

Make sure to get a carfax and look up the VIN number. Check to see if there's been any major repairs and regular maintenance

Are u finsncing,? If u are going cash and need simple a used Honda civic with 80k for 6 k or less is good. I have bought several older cars to put miles on and it's been good..used Honda civic 2012 bought at 85k and drive to 204k, used jetta that bought at 110k and put 20k on it in 6 months still going strong..those cars cost 4k only..good drivers. If your looking for a porch or maserati be prepared for high maintenance.

I swear it's like I was meant to be here this morning. Reading this I have been having a little bit of troubles getting a car because of their job income proof. I tried to make one on Photoshop which I did pretty good at until I missed the gross salary! I'm gonna try car edge✌️😋

Buy Chevy or Jeep, love my truck and jeep. Don’t buy from Carla , they are worthless and overpriced.
I’d look to a local place and most of them give you 90 day warranty. But for sure take it to a mechanic to inspect. I have a great mechanic if you are interested.

Buy from private parties, on cars, cargurus, autotrader sites. Then find a pre purchase inspection service to check out the car for you. It may cost a few hundred up front, but you won't have to be stuck with a lemon which may cost you thousands.
You can also try the real auto dealership, they will have warranty for the car they sell.
Consult kelly blue book for how much you should pay for a particular car.
Avoid carmax and carvana, I have heard horror stories buying from them. And especially avoid used car lots.
