Honestly, I get your worried about your friend, however unfortunately it sounds like you can't worry about "him" you have to figure your own situation out. I would start by just doing what you can to help your own situation & THAN if your in a situation to help someone one else you can help them. But the best advice would be figure your own situation out, since people are infamous for doing what is best for them. I stopped worrying about others along time ago & was the best thing I ever did...
HOWEVER with all that said, I do hope you get your car figured out & your able to do what YOU need to do for yourself

Take care of yourself first. Check out the car rental agencies and look for unlimited mileage and discounts for long term usages. You mentioned your friend did something stupid. Ever hear the phrase? " You can't fix STUPID". Your never gonna be able to help someone who happily bring you down to their misery level. " Misery loves company ." Your gonna have to figure this out on your own. Don't worry about the car situation as that will work itself out. If you hit someone on the freeway and thats what caused the car to be 'totally totaled' then the insurance company will for sure be involved and you might have to pay for the other drivers car repairs. Hopefully there were no injuries.
But your dude in jail? Bond dude out and have a great NYE!

I am sorry you are going through a difficult time. At times like this, it is best to calm down & do not let the stress overwhelms you. Approach each crisis one at a time. It will all eventually unfold & you will be able to solve everyone of them. Take them as they come.
In regards to your friend's situation, you have to solve you own immediate problems before you are able to help him or anyone. His hurdles will also eventually unfold before him.
I know it sound like a cliché. Because it is. I too have had these unfortunate events & episodes in life. So did everyone. We clear each hurdle as they face us. Some are taller than others & may appear to be a Herculean task. However, none are insurmountable.
All of us faced our crisis & scaled each & every Everest before us. Eventually, we overcame them all.
I am confident you will too. Take care of yourself first. When you overcome all your problems and free yourself from them, you will be in a position to help others.
