Carson is part of Southbay group. Long Beach and it's neighboring cities makes up a pretty large area on it's own and is bordered by the 710, 605 and 105 freeways.

See wiki links below for South Bay and Gateway Cities. "South Bay" is the southern part of the Santa Monica Bay which extends as far south as San Pedro/Port of Los Angeles and as far inland as the 110 freeway (Carson, Gardena). Gateway Cities are those in southern Los Angeles County that are a "gateway" to Orange County.
HX has correctly placed the Classified sections for Carson and Long Beach:- California > Los Angeles > Southbay > Inland Cities > Carson
- California > Los Angeles > Gateway > Central (710 to 5) > Long Beach

As far as people posting their ads in neighboring areas, that is just to try to increase visibility. You get two ads, so why not post one in the exact area you are and a second in a neighboring section to let your friends know you are not too far a drive away. If I was staying near the Long Beach Airport, for example, I would do one ad in Long Beach and a second either in South Bay or West Orange County.

I’ve lived in the Southbay, for over 25 years.
Boundaries are vague, and vary.
Essentially: the Beach Cities; El Segundo, to the north, and Rancho PV, to the south. Also Torrance.
Inland cities, may include: Hawthorne, LAX AREA, Lawndale, Lomita.
Just my 2 Lira.
