6 to 1 odds he's not dead.
Kidding, couldn't pass up the betting joke.
Saw him once years ago at the Shops at Caesars - he was there trying to sell autographs.
No one was buying, I felt it pretty fitting.

I always liked "Charlie Hustle". His energy, skill and personality were unmatched.
He may never make it into the Hall of Fame because of the gambling stuff but from what I read, he never bet against his team. That's confidence and putting your money where you mouth is, If he'd bet against his team, I'd think he was a cheater and jump off the band wagon,
He has said "I bet on my own team to win" . . . I was wrong, but I didn't taint the game. I bet on my team every night because that's the confidence that I had in my players. And I was wrong."
Reggie Bush got Heisman Trophy back 14 years so maybe Charlie Hustle will get into the Hall of Fame at some point. Rules and attitudes change. Unless your stats were juiced, I think excellence should be recognized.

One of the greatest to ever to step foot on the diamond
Last time that I saw Pete Rose was at a signing in the Forum Shops at Caesar's , and I told Pete that I was a huge Dodgers fan growing up but we all admired his skills and the way that he played the game, and that he belonged in the Hall of Fame long ago... He was very cool and thanked me for my kind words, just a great guy...

If you have MAX aka HBO, I recommend you check out the 4 part documentary series Charlie Hustle & The Matter of Pete Rose.
RIP.

I first started attending Dodger games in 1958 in the LA Coliseum.
Where Wally Moon had the Moon shot.
We were brought up to hate the Giants, I still do.
When those of us that were baseball, first started watching Pete Rose
We knew that was the way to play the game.
I was pissed when he took out Fosse.
The big red machine was impressive.
Rest in peace, Pete Rose.

RIP Charlie Hustle..He needs to be in the HOF!

True, he didn't bet against his team, but that's besides the point - he broke the rules in place at the time.
I suppose it's a moot point now but I would say it's similar to insider stock trading.
Insider stock trading - buying or selling a stock based on information not known to the public is illegal.
If you *buy* stock based on insider info, it's just the same as if you were to dump the stock.
Rose, was 'inside' - knew stuff likely not known to the general public.
He knew the rules, he ignored them (as many insiders do) - he just got caught is all.

EVERY team locker room has had a sign hanging in it for the last 60 years:
'Bet on Baseball you'll be banned for life.'
I don't care if he bet against or for his team.
He knew that betting on BB was an automatic lifetime ban.
He just thought he was bigger than the game. Then he cried about it when he got caught.
He got what he deserved.

Sad that he's gone but more sad about how he will be remembered. Agree that it was of his own doing though. He got caught and paid the price.

It was mentioned it was a “lifetime” ban. Now that his life is over, INDUCTING him into HOF is an honor for his family , and also to be celebrated by his fans.
Place a footnote under the plaque if needed, but his onfield accomplishments need to be recognized and celebrated.

I-recall the controversy raised when Roger Maris hit 61 home runs surpassing the 60 by Babe Ruth.
There was an asterisk placed at the time as Maris played 162 games to achieve 61 whereas Ruth played only 154 games to achieve 60.
Now with many surpassing 60 homeruns in modern day baseball, the asterisk ,
, if still present is made moot.
