Anyone who mentions Keith Richards as a great guitarist should probably eat soap for dinner. He was never the best guitarist even in his own band.

Stop it with Keith Moon. That dude couldn't keep a beat the rest of the band looked to John Antwhistle so they could play a song. Bonzo and Peart, then everyone else.

Jimmy Page probably has the most number of recognizable and frequently re-used guitar riffs of all. I like his acoustic work as well.
Bonham was a steady drummer and a master of triplets and the swing grove. He made Zeppelin a force.
Keith Moon had his place with a wild randomness in his grove. Like he's always peaking and can't level off with the energy.
Keith Richards is the best impersonator of a dead musician. Nobody listens to the Stones and says "That fucking guitar lick is Awesome!"

as a drummer, when buddy rich played, we all sat at the foot of the stage in awe of this man’s talent
not a rock drummer, but probably the finest and fastest jazz drummer ever
and surprisingly a nice guy, not some arrogant prima donna

Now that Neil Peart is gone, the greatest living drummer is Danny Carey, hands down. And not only is he still alive, he's still relevant, innovative, and most of all, damn fun to watch.

For drummers, one name I haven't seen in this thread that belongs in the conversation is Stevie Wonder. In 1974 Eric Clapton reportedly said he was the best drummer of their generation.
As to guitarists, a name not mentioned above that should be is Andy Summers from The Police.
Anyone claiming Dave Grohl is one of the best drummers of all time needs to pay more attention. He freely admits he stole the Smells Like Teen Spirit opening from the Gap Band's Burn Rubber and I think he has stated both Prince and Taylor Hawkins were better drummers.

If we are talking about jazz influencers, but restricting to the instrument of guitar, go check out Charlie Christian. As far as I know, the first to popularize a guitar solo in a big band. Died too young at 25, so it's amazing the influence he left at such a young age.
