No, frozen wind turbines aren’t the main culprit for Texas’ power outages (Part 2)
Feb 18 2021 02:34AM more by Night-Rider
Tags: Current Events

"Most of the shortfall in electric power generation during the current cold snap is the result of natural gas and coal powered plants going offline."

"The wind is not solely to blame," explained Wade Schauer, a research director at energy research consultancy Wood Mackenzie to Bloomberg News. Of the 34 gigawatts generation capacity forced offline, Schauer estimates that about 27 gigawatts of coal, nuclear, and gas capacity is unavailable in part because the cold has driven up demand for natural gas for heating. "That's the bigger problem," he told Bloomberg News. The pipeline system is not able to deliver enough natural gas to supply both higher demand for home heating and power generation."

"In fact, similar state-wide power outages previously occurred in February 2011 when wind and solar power constituted less than 4 percent of Texas' generation capacity. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's report on the 2011 weather event noted that 193 generating units failed, resulting in rolling power outages that affected 3.2 million customers. Most of the outages in 2011 occurred as a result of frozen sensors and valves and natural gas shortages. The same problems with insufficiently winterized equipment appear to be happening now."

"It is worth noting that winds from the storm were boosting power production from the unfrozen coastal wind turbines and thus offsetting some of the other power generation losses."

Don't forget they use wind turbines in Canada and in Northern Europe that are designed to work in the colder weather. Texas could have used those right now.

"Maintaining electric power gird reliability while integrating ever more renewable power supplies is not a simple problem, but that does not seem to be the main issue with the current outages in Texas."

Naw, dude.

Lots of gloom and doom here.

Conservative leaders placing blame elsewhere instead of taking responsibility, religious types saying it’s the “wrath of God” because we voted Biden, neighbor turning on neighbor for supplies to stay warm (out of the Mad Max movies), Limbaugh’s bloated corpse being brought out and cut open to use for methane for fuel and to stick Trumptards in to keep warm (like a Tauntaun).

Pass the popcorn.

Good times.

The last time Austin got below 10 degrees was 1951.

This is a once-in-a-generation storm/event.

So, people can blame whatever they want, but both the wind people and the fossil people did not expect this, because its such a rare thing.

Its a rare natural disaster, like an earthquake - imagine if the rest of the country was like "haha, stupid CA, they get earthquakes, why are they all fucked up on a 9.5? they should have just built their buildings stronger."

Ya'll are fucked up.

^^^What he said

Our energy infrastructure is pretty outdated in a lot of places. We have rolling blackouts during the summer, have to shut down the grid during high wind events, and god forbid we get the really good shake we know is coming at some point.

Remember when the hurricane hit Puerto Rico and the whole electrical grid went down. All most people heard about was how power wasn’t turned back on in a few days because it was a good way to point fingers at politicians they don’t like. There was very little coverage on how severely outdated and inadequate their electrical infrastructure was, because that goes back to people that aren’t even in office or alive anymore. They basically had to rebuild the entire electrical grid on the island.

As I recall.... There was a big WH summit in 2017 that never really got off the ground because someone sabotaged it by standing up pointing a finger at the President and stormed out of the room. Never to to talk seriously about infrastructure again....

Now why would someone who is concerned about infrastructure not work with the executive branch ? It's simple ... 1) they want the credit. 2) They want it implemented their way and only their way. 3) You can't demonize your opponent if you help do the right thing for the people in cooperation with your opponent.

We as in the inhabitants of earth "are fucked up" is very true.

The result of climate change is that these rare events are becoming more common due to the imbalance of the system by the earth's increased mean temperature due to the increased retention of the suns radiant energy due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere.

The changes are here to stay unfortunately, the real dire effects won't impact most of us on Hx, what we see happening in Texas and the other fly over states is just a harbinger of things to come on a more frequent basis with even more wilder swings of minimums and maximums of weather in terms of temperatures, rainfall, snowfall, etc.

Here are some data from NASA for you to ponder on the type of world you want to leave for your descendants.

...and Ted Cruz just flew to Cancun while his constituents suffer. LOL

Not only do they not own up to their deregulation philosophy and "let the market decide" profit driven narratives....they bail on their people and blame AOC. Classic GOP.

You know...if Texas wasn't so far north then they wouldnt have to deal with the cold weather that other states seem to handle so much better.

I dont understand the thinking of someone who thinks that the Texas enegy situation is somehow an issue only experienced in Texas. Here im California we have rolling backouts for the exact same reason.... The big difference is it happens in the summer when all our power generation resourxes are online.... Yet something occurs in Texas and somehow your reasoning is that we are doing it right?

^ I read that 5 times and still cant make out your point.

Yeah Texas has some frozen infrastructure and now Progressives from a bunch of giant shithole blue states want to act as if they are doing things right...?

Not a chance.

Setting climate policy aside for a minute.. Florida and Texas are basically the business model for how these other ass wipe blue states like NY, NJ, CA, and a few others should operate.

CA is not the national shining example of anything good. It's an example of how and why you dont want progressive idiots to be in charge of anything that matters.

@wunanddun , the CA rolling blackouts are planned and last hours, not days

CA also had rolling blackouts in the early 2000's when power companies subjected this state to predatory "death star" practices that sold surplus power to other states and then sold it back to CA at a premium and in the process created blackouts on purpose

The point is that companies and govt officials in the pockets of giant corporations don't want regulations so they can cheap out and use every exploit to leach money from individuals because fuck'em

As I recall Schwarzenegger ran against the policies and lack of effort Davis was putting into trying to stop power companies from dicking around the state. Davis thought it was 'business as usual' not corporations being assholes and fucking over a whole state to make money ON PURPOSE.

All of the annoying taxes shit that CA residents see here is so that they dont get fucked over like other states do. Texas companies have known for a long time that these were issues that other states literally above them have dealt with for decades but fuck if it aint broke dont fix it right? Even though customers are paying for a service and infrastructure and future maintenance and planning too?

No the money matters more fuck 'em if they are too poor to or didn't come out of a rich vagina to be better off lol

@flyntla .... you are right ... they are planned why???? Because they can't generate enough power. They are basically controlling you putting a regulator on your electrical use. Meanwhile you can't buy and use your own generator ... you think that's ok.... I don't

Sooo it used to be we thought natural gas was a clean energy alternative and you could quickly meet a need of 8ncreased energy demand by spinning up a gas turbine generator fueld by natural gas. But 8n today's world nothing is clean enough but the things they do approve of has detrimental effects as well...... just not on something they care about. Our energy use is not going down and soon they will be regulating it mark .... its a logical conclusion or their agenda. Soooo you won't be able to blog all day cheering your team on and celebrating the death or canceling of someone you don't like....im almost giddy with excitement waiting for that day to come.

That energy manipulation in 2000 and 2001 was made possible by deregulation passed in 1996 under Pete Wilson (R) AND the legislature (D). As I recall they did a test run on some border town. Then they screwed San Diego. in 2000. Thein in 2001 they screwed the whole state. Davis was slow to react. But in 2001 it was too late. He declared a state of Emergency in January, and asked the Federal Government for help but Cheney was best friends with the same energy companies that were screwing us and having them write the national energy policy... and the feds regulate interstate power. Lets have the states figure out the issues amongst themselves.

Davis still won re-election in 2002. But about 6 weeks after he won, the Republicans wanted a do-over so they Rep Issa (Car thief) and associates launched a recall. Waste of money right? We just had an election. It was a good plan as he wasnt super popular because he was slow to react to the problem and the Republicans would have a chance with one popular Republican running against several popular democrats, including the LT Governor Bustamante (sp?) who would definitely peel votes off from Davis in the Hispanic community. So even though they lanched it immediately after he won....they sold it 10 months later as something that was just happening after giving him some time. Not the same circumstances with Newsome...but it is the only way the Republicans can win the Governorship in California at this point is through recall elections where anyone can run and the votes are split.

Gas was cheap because it was easy to get. But as demand goes up so will it's price. But the real cost of natural gas is the fracking methods used to extract it contaminate the ground water.

- Senators can't do shit about power outages. I'm not a fan of Ted Cruz but who gives a fuck where he is. Only CNN, MSNBC and lefties wanting to cause mischief.
- While wind power failure is not the cause of the power outages in TX it should make us think about the limitations of the various ways of generating power. Wind, nuclear and fossil fueled power systems failed.
- We should work to eliminate single points of failure but how much do we invest to mitigate 100 year events.

Less than $1000 investment: Home use generator, fuel for 5 days, propane tanks and camp stoves or bbq and you are mini-ice age proof.

I'm surprised no one has told ppl to just not be poor

lol

My grandpa drank himself to death after his Enron stock went to shit

As for me, I came out here in the worst time, 2008 when things went to shit. That was rough for any millenial (and it still is lol)

Today I do better than most people that are natives of this state, relatively speaking. Unless you inherited your parent's house or your grandparents life insurance or lucked out on some business ownership or equity, most native Californians are just lazy shits, period. Anyone I have met here that is self made is from another state or another country. Anyone that complains about taxes and other bullshit is someone that was born here (or in some cases shit out) and just took over their predecessor's earnings and efforts.

Nothing is perfect, but I can see that there are the usual dipshits that love nothing but to cause a commotion about liberalism and taxes/sunk cost fallacies and whatevers for the sake of arguing. It's like continuing religious dogma because that is all you know because that is how you were raised. Can't think outside the box but you all love to nut in it

I'd like to point out the contradictions of a rightwing mindset and their conservative values on a site like this of all places...I hope you righties are all Catholic so you can confess your sins in a church closet later............lol

Who cares where Ted Cruz is? Uhh.,..I thought leaders were supposed to lead. Now I know he has only been active in Texas politics for the last 18 years and currently represents all 30 million Texans in the U.S Senate... so it is a bit of a stretch thinking he has any responsibility to lead...but seeing as it was his buddy Governor Greg Abbott who first appointed him way back in 2003 to start his career in Texas politics, maybe he could stay by his side and at least help him blame AOC and solar panels for all the industry problems?

But Texas politicians are special kind of crazy. Sure not Marjorie Greene crazy...but you have people suffering and dying. Ted Cruz runs away, Tim Boyd says go f yourselves and stop complaining, the rest say not our fault....it's boogeyman's fault!
We have to stretch our memories way back to 2011 when something like this happened and proved it can happen again. But apparently some bartender/cum laude dual major student from New York somehow secretly replaced the entire Texas power grid with renewable energy and convinced the Texas legislature that winter-izing your gas lines and water lines was bad for the environment or some green nonsense.

LOL Ted Cruz update.
He blamed his kids.
Even Fox News was ripping him.
While private business owners are opening their shops, stores and showrooms as shelters, Beto O'Rourke is organizing people to help seniors, (The guy he beat for the Senate), Ted Cruz says....
Well the kids who were out of school since last Friday...said hey were out of school and nothing to do....and then having to deal with so much hardship with covid and the weather (in our privileged lives)...so me and the wife being the awesome parents we are...decided to plan a vacation and leave on Thursday for Cancun. I guess all the flights were booked for 5 days. His staff requested a police escort to the airport because they have nothing better to do at this time....and he jetted off to Cancun. Upon sitting in his airplane seat...he then began to have doubts. Really? No doubts before then? He then decided to come back early when it got a little too hot in Cancun to blame his kids and his awesome parenting. There is a reason his colleagues hate him...and it is pretty obvious. Yet some of you continue to defend him. Boggles the mind. It was a stupid decision. Like eating at public restaurant after telling everyone to stay home(Newsome)...stupid decision.

I dont give a flip that Ted Cruz went to Cancun... what real liberal chaos is this useless story distracting us from?

Did he lie about where he was?.. unlike AOC saying she was at the Capital BUT WASNT..

Did he fly commercial or take a PRIVATE JET like our Green New Deal leader John Kerry?...

Do we expect Cruz to be out in the fields de-icing wind generators?..

Why dont you guys start focusing on more worthy conundrums like why is it that the FBI, DC police, and the House speaker had repeated warnings of trouble and requests for more Security and National Guard prior to Jan 6th but did ***NOTHING*** about.

Then we get to watch video of ANTIFA leading the breaking to the Capitol.

Just saying... pull your heads out of the sand and think.

The average American generates 5 tons of carbon per year
Bill Gates generates 2,000 tons flying around on his private jet
Now he's bidding to own a private jet company, Signature
Meanwhile the poor will suffer the worst in his clmate change fantasy world, as they just did in Texas

Say what you want about the lack of "winterization" of the fossil fuel generating capability and Texas will now spend the money to prevent another black swan event like this one
But, solar and wind failed virtually 100% this week
Proving that moving 100% to non renewables is utter folly, especially in the next 10 years
As even Bill Gates knows

WSJ printed info today that completely devastates OP's posts

I like that WSJ will have an article written by Rahm Emmanuel, former Obama and Clinton advisor, next to an article written by Mitch McConnell's devastating piece against Trump next to Allen Blinder, former Fed vice chairman. Only NYT does that ocassionaly while WSJ does it all the time.

That's what we should be about, all opinions freely shared, neither side has cornered the market on good ideas that work in the real world.

Gotta have an open mind.
You dumb fucks that watch just CNN or just Fox which simply cements your already demented opinion
