I agree with leopold. At least take a taste...you might be surprised as many home brews are very tasty and far better than those listed above....

The store bought beer you mentioned ...  
The home brew ... depends on if it's a dark/amber ale, stout, IPA or pilsner.
Dark/amber ale or stout I'll absolutely give it a shot.
IPA or pilsner or 'sour' beer pass.

if it passes a sniff test, i'd try it. it's unfortunate but sometimes with home made brews, it's not made right and smells 'off'
i'd pass on any bud, bud light, miller, etc. and go for a scotch or bourbon
