Due a sudden and catastrophic family event that took me away from CA a few years ago, I started doing a significant amount of cooking. I'd alway done cave man cooking, the thaw it, burn it on the grill, then eat it thing. But this situation meant I had to figure out how to really prepare actual healthy meals, three times a day. So I took started reading, took individual classes, went to a school.
Turns out I really enjoy cooking and am really good at it. Wish I had discovered that sooner and under less tragic circumstances.

If I’m being brutally honest, my one true regret is not becoming a writer of fiction. My travels have been extraordinary, full of stories begging to be told, but instead of weaving them into novels, I let them gather dust in my mind and those I am close to. A missed an opportunity to turn real-life adventures into the kind of fiction that would have made *me* and those I have met along the way re-live adventures and seek long forgotten relationships.
Yes, I’m a computer engineer and a leader in the field, unfortunately. Coding and algorithms, fuck them I'll outsource that shit. I’ll admit I enjoyed them at one point, until I didn’t. But deep down, I always knew I was meant for a story, not wordplay, I could care less about confusing people with words. Instead of layering complex lines of code, I should have been weaving plots, crafting characters, and molding my experience and those I meet into experience, like it was putty.
The signs were always there: I was the kid who sketched boats designs to sail, dreamed up wild adventures where i took the lady sailboat, and told tall tales in place of actually paying attention to math (sorry, algebra, you were always so needy of my time). I spent more time daydreaming about how to present an experience that made people feel warmth than debugging my homework. Of course, I chose the “practical” route. Because clearly, the world needed yet another computer engineer that was a Newport Beach born white guy that was sailing at 4 years old. Spoiler alert: it didn’t.
What the world really needed was a witty sarcastic, slightly jaded writer with a flair for turning minor inconveniences into dramatic sagas, plus some well-timed snark. A person that understood the words of hate from others and realized it was not their reality, not mine and just listened. Listened to their story, their life, their hate, and weave it into a character of interest. Interest of why they are! What if they had my life, privilege, my support.
So, sure, I ended up with a comfortable life of excess, fun, and a respectable career, but nothing can replace that nagging “what if” of not pursuing the path I feel would have brought me more joy, after the fact. The code I write might be efficient, but my heart? It’s still out there, chasing the next story of a life well lived. Fuck... It just came to mind, is HX just another story to be written?

Kudos to the author for kicking off this blog, almost six years in, and still sparking thought like a well-placed sparkler at a dull new years eve party. It’s no small feat to stay relevant in the ever-shifting digital landscape, yet hx blogs keeps on encouraging reflection with the same enthusiasm it had on day one. Here's to longevity, wit, and a blog that’s far more than just pixels on a screen, it's a mind workout that never gets old!
I would love to see a part 2 for 2025 version.....
