Crafted spear break easily without some advanced skills but that's what spears with attached weapons are for. Slicing up a hoard becomes no problem with these weapons.

Also, using a saw or garden saw, you can saw 1x log into 3x planks for carpentry exp. The planks are not that great as melee weapons but can be used with nails and a hammer to barricade windows and doors.
